The article is devoted to a historiosophical analysis of the evolution of the narrative of atonement as a key mechanism for overcoming collective colonial trauma in Ukrainian philosophical and cultural thought of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The relevance of the study stems from the need for a decolonial reinterpretation of national history, which for a long time was perceived through the prism of an imperial narrative of defeats. This historical legacy gave rise to a sociocultural imperative to trace the transition from an ethics of suffering to an ethics of political responsibility. The authors analyze the works of Taras Shevchenko, who was the first to articulate colonial trauma as a profound ontological condition of internal enslavement and “collective sin.”
The crisis of the liberation struggles in the early twentieth century prompted the transformation of the narrative of atonement from an ethics of suffering into an ethics of political action. This transformation assumed two principal ideological forms, each proposing an alternative path toward overcoming trauma. Dmytro Dontsov transformed the ideal of atonement into voluntarism and an “ethics of action.” He rejected provincialism and humanist illusions, replacing them with the will to power, expansion, and creative violence. For Dontsov, atonement constituted an act of ideological struggle and the self-assertion of a strong, “conquering” nation. Viacheslav Lypynskyi, by contrast, proposed a conservative narrative of atonement. He identified the causes of historical defeats in internal anarchy and the destructive practices of the elites. For him, atonement entailed restoring order and state discipline through the establishment of classocracy and the formation of a politically responsible leading stratum, emphasizing the need to “eradicate anarchy within oneself first and foremost.”
In conclusion, the study demonstrates that, throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the narrative of atonement evolved from a moral and religious obligation into a political and ideological strategy. This evolution attests to the maturation of Ukrainian philosophical thought, which moved from diagnosing trauma toward developing practical doctrines aimed at affirming national agency through will and order.
