Опис: Introduction. The article investigates English adjectives of dimension and their peculiarities of use and methods of translation based on the BBC`s documentaries “The Blue Planet” and “Life”. The modern stage of linguistics` development is characterized by increased attention to systematic analysis and structuring of the lexical composition of the language, in particular, the adjectives of dimension. Despite the significant achievements of domestic and foreign linguistics in the study of adjectives of dimension and the unrelenting interest of scientists to them, a number of problems remain unresolved. Thus, the problem of field semantics of adjectives with their wide range of lexical compatibility belongs to underdeveloped ones, although they are quite rich in their semantics and actively engage in synonymous and antonymic relations. The problem of their translation remains insufficiently studied. Purpose. The discrepancy in the structures of the conceptual space of the English adjectives of dimension is determined. The basic stylistic and semantic differences between the English adjectives of dimension that belong to the same micro field are established. The main methods and techniques of translation of the adjectives of dimension small and little are determined. Methods. In our article the distributive analysis of the peculiarities of the use of the adjectives of dimension is carried out. Results. According to T. Linnik's classification, the adjectives of dimension small and little refer to the microfield of a small overall size. In our material, the adjective of dimension small (13%) is used more often than little (4.1%). In our opinion, this is due to the fact that small is a more neutral word and does not have an emotional component, therefore, it transmits the objective feature of the subject, whereas little is emotionally colored and characterizes the speaker's views on certain subjects and expresses the sense of a person as to whether other phenomenon, subject, etc. Regarding the frequency of use, small is used more often when it comes to the size of specific physical objects. In addition, in our material, there are some cases of use of adjective small with comparative structures; sometimes this lexical unit is accompanied by adverbs of amplifying semantics. Also, the adjective of dimension small is often used with the collective nouns, which differs from the adjective little. Originality. This is the first study of the adjectives of dimension in native English studies, which is highlighted in the translation-related aspect. The new research material is English-language films and their oral interpretation, which we recorded in writing. In addition, the translation-related aspect is considered from the standpoint of the plurality of translation texts. For the first time, a holistic analysis was performed and the peculiarities of translation of English adjectives of dimension were established. Conclusion. The adjective of dimension small is also more often than little indicates the size of inanimate objects, in particular parts of the body. According to the observation of many researchers, small is used mostly when it is necessary to emphasize the small size of an object or a creature, when it is simply stated that a small amount of its value, little is used. Sometimes it is possible to interchange little to small in the presence of emotionally and stylistically neutral context. But, as V. Shakhovskii notes, replacement is not possible when an existing context specifies the small size of an object, in this case only the adjective small is used. The small particle also indicates the size of inanimate objects, in particular parts of the body, more often than not. So, the adjectives of dimension are translated with the use of different lexical-grammatical transformations such as: replacement of the word of one part of the language into another word (nominalization, adverbatization), lexical (contextual) replacement, semantic development.
